Our HISTORY
& STORY

Among many curiosities, Calipo takes its name from the city’s ancient Greek designation, ‘Kallipolis,’ meaning ‘beautiful city.’ Under the Portuguese rule the city became Vila Viçosa, or ‘Ravishing Land’ in English—a tribute to the town’s lush flora, standing in contrast to the surrounding Alentejo region. Vila Viçosa is one of Portugal’s landmarks, with a rich history dating back to Roman times. Strategically significant, it played a key role time and again in defending against Spanish invasions. Its importance as a fortified town continued through the centuries, with ancient landmarks reflecting its heritage.

The property’s palace has witnessed centuries of history, having been home to many families; kings, dukes, diplomats, politicians, and cardinals have all passed through its halls, and countless stories told, written, and lived there. Over the centuries, the palace has been renovated and transformed without losing its peculiar and majestic soul. The building’s unusual architectural features sparks curiosity—triangular roofs pointing toward the unknown, arches resembling portals to another realm, and suspended gardens that bring you closer to the sky. Calipo’s renovation ensured the preservation of the palace’s original features and style, creating 14 luxurious suites that respect its history and environment.
